Use tech to get time back
2017, where did you go?
2017 passed with the blink of an eye, I imagine I’m the same as many other business owners in taking a few quiet moments over the Christmas break to reflect on the year. Last year I worked with quite a variety of clients including an electrician, commercial cleaner, florist, health & safety consultant, accountant, bookkeeper, charity, restaurant, logistics and a loans company. You might wonder what such a diverse group of clients could have in common : it boils down to productivity. Regular phrases I hear are:
“we must be able to do this more efficiently”
“I have to enter the same data in 4 places”
“our paperwork is awful, I never seem to catch up”
“we lose too many sales opportunities”.
Small businesses need to be agile
Now more than ever they need to be agile, they need to be able to respond quickly to the opportunities out there, they need to be able to cut through the digital clutter. Having simple and effective back office systems to deal with the day to day is the game changer. “Back office system” seems too grand a term, just an ipad/tablet/smartphone, the right apps and the cloud is enough to buy you time back. This isn’t an earth-shattering revelation, great pay as you go software in the form of apps has been around for years but many businesses still haven’t dipped their toes in the water yet. I see business owners run ragged trying to keep up with demand, not having the right technology holds them back and reduces their free time significantly.
Use technology to get time back
I find it hugely satisfying enabling them to get time back and bring in more business. One particular client was spending hours writing up reports after site inspections. I created digital forms for their ipads that they could use (offline if needed) during inspections, then auto create complex reports afterwards. This saved them a minimum of 3 hours per inspection. Translate that into cash and multiply by number of inspections, subtract the cost of the app and it’s still a huge saving.
Technology doesn’t have to be complicated, the key is picking the right tool for your business.
